Performance Tech Motorsports Welcomes 2020 at Daytona International Speedway
Performance Tech Motorsports is hitting the ground running this weekend during the Roar Before the 24 at the World Center of Racing in Daytona Beach.
Performance Tech Motorsports is ringing in 2020 at Daytona International Speedway with Round One of IMSA Prototype Challenge featuring two Ligier JS P3 entries for the team. Having no time to waste Performance Tech also participates in eight on track sessions with the No. 38 Centinel Spine ORECA LMP2 in preparation for the Rolex 24 at Daytona later in the month. While fielding three entries under one tent seems overwhelming to some, Team Principal Brent O’Neil and his crew are no strangers to the task.
“It wouldn’t be a new year if we didn’t kick it off at Daytona,” O’Neill said. “Having our LMP3 and LMP2 guys together for the first weekend really sets the tone for the rest of the season. Cameron, Max, Blake and Dan have all done at least one season with us so this should be a really strong first race for all of them. In our LMP2 car we’ve got a seasoned lineup as well with Kyle, Robert, Cameron and now Don Yount. Don is joining us in the No. 38 and he’s raced Daytona plenty of times before, not with us, but we have nothing to worry about with his experience.”
A trip to the Performance Tech pit this weekend will surround you with plenty of familiar faces. The No. 6 Motel 6 LMP3 will be piloted by Blake Mount, Denver, Colorado, and Dan Goldburg, Delray Beach, both veterans to the team. Mount is ready to undertake his second season in Prototype Challenge with his eyes on the championship. Goldburg is new to the LMP3 but no stranger to Prototype Challenge. He last competed in the series with Performance Tech in 2013, finishing fourth in the championship. The pair immediately meshed during the IMSA MICHELIN Sportscar Encore making them hungrier than ever for success.
The Performance Tech Motorsports lineup would hardly be complete without Cameron Cassels, British Columbia. Cassels returns for a third year in the No. 75 NorCan Electric LMP3, this time joined by Max Hanratty, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Along with Mount and Goldburg the duo made their debut at the IMSA MICHELIN Sportscar Encore. They scored a second-place qualifying position and fifth-place finish deeming them a car to watch this season.
To cap off the list of veterans the team’s father-son pairing of Dr. Robert Masson and Kyle Masson, Windemere, will reunite in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship No. 38 Centinel Spine ORECA LMP2 entry. They will share the No. 38 with Cassels and Yount as the quartet prepares for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
The focus of the weekend will be synchronizing all four drivers to find an ideal compromise on setup. The drivers are already well acquainted with one another’s driving styles having been teammates and competitors on track together previously. Settling back into a rhythm will take little to no time allowing Performance Tech to tweak the smaller details on the car its competitors won’t have time to think about until the weekend of the race.
The Roar Before the 24 weekend begins Thursday, Jan. 2 with a full day of media opportunities for the drivers. Friday, Jan. 3 presents the team with three practice in IMSA Prototype Challenge and two in IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. Saturday, Jan. 4 sees the weekend main event as the green flag falls on Round One of IMSA Prototype Challenge at 12:15 p.m. ET. The team closes out the weekend on Sunday, Jan. 5 with two final practice sessions for the No. 38 Centinel Spine ORECA LMP2.
